Windows to Heaven

In a neighborhood where most people are Protestant or Roman Catholic, a different religious order is beginning to attract parishioners on Bedford Avenue in Pittsburgh's Hill District. Inside Saint Moses the Black Orthodox Church, beautiful icons are not only considered sacred, but are seen as remarkable works of art. Pastor and community activist, the Reverend Paul Abernathy, has rescued some icons from a now-closed Orthodox church and has also commissioned a local iconographer to create more. Rev. Abernathy sees the icons as a symbol of hope and rebirth in a neighborhood anxious for change and struggling to rebound.
